“The Most Primitive is Always Contemporary”
Dogu Nova is a family-run pottery studio founded in 1980,
dedicated to preserving the traditions of Japanese Dogu
while gradually reinterpreting with contemporary views and
values. For over 40 years, Takaomi Izawa has devoted himself
to recreating the crafts of Japan's prehistoric creation, not as
replicas, but as design form. His grandson, Motoki Amagai,
continues that work with the same conviction. And he stands
for a shift.
Dogu Nova, as the name suggests, is that shift; a movement
for the ancient objects to be seen not as an artifact, but as a
source of inspiration, and ultimately, as art. Together, giving a
spotlight to artisans without a name. The one who makes
should matter as much as the one who sells. And we refuse
an industry that values promotion over the hands and values
that make. Dogu has inspired so many artist and historians.
And valuing the past is our approach of making the future.
At the same time, Artisans have to be open-minded to the
“new”. That is why we seek what is new and bold, while
respecting and preserving the past from what came before.
We believe that balance is the essence, so that we say
“The most primitive is always contemporary.”
With Gratitude.
